Study Group Teaching Method Description:

Begin using learning centers to more effectively facilitate child-directed learning and extend the classroom curriculum. Learning centers provide a highly motivating and engaging learning environment for students, while at the same time providing teachers a way to individualize instruction.

Learning centers are an effective instructional strategy because they facilitate cooperation, student-directed learning, and curriculum enrichment.  Students who work in learning centers are motivated by the fun, active manner in which information is acquired.  Learning centers work particularly well for students in the primary grades because younger students enjoy constructive learning and group-work. Learning centers also provide opportunities for turn-taking, critical thinking, and age-appropriate problem solving.  Teachers who implement learning centers tend to have a classroom dynamic that allows the teacher to work with individuals and small groups of students in order to appropriately address the needs of all students.
