Study Group Teaching Method Description:

Does juggling the various aspects of a balanced literacy program seem utterly impossible at times?  If so, this Study Group is for you!  Team Members will be provided with the support needed to successfully incorporate all components of a balanced literacy program into classroom instruction, including shared reading, phonics and phonemic awareness lessons, comprehension lessons, and writing lessons.  By incorporating each of these literacy elements into the curriculum, students will begin to gain access to the different forms of literacy that they need to become fluent, confident readers.

Balanced literacy is a program that takes a lot of time, effort, and planning because of all of the different themes and lessons that need to be regularly – and fluidly – linked.  While it might be time-consuming and difficult to manage at first, incorporating a balanced literacy program into the classroom soon becomes easier to handle and vastly enjoyable to students.  In order to make this particular program a success, however, the teacher needs a good understanding of literacy as a whole, which is why this method lends itself so well to the collaborative Study Group design.
